The chemical formula of sodium carbonate is Na2CO3, also known as soda ash. Anhydrous sodium carbonate is a white powder or fine particle that melts without decomposition when heated to 851 ℃, with a relative density of 2.532. Easy to dissolve in water, releases heat when dissolved; Due to its strong alkaline and weak acid salt nature, it is highly hydrolyzed in water and its aqueous solution exhibits strong alkalinity. Gradually absorb 1mol/L of water (about 15%) in exposed air. Carbon dioxide begins to lose at 400 ℃. When exposed to acid, it will decompose and produce effervescence. Soluble in water (3.5 parts at room temperature and 2.2 parts at 35 ℃) and glycerol, insoluble in alcohol. The aqueous solution is strongly alkaline with a pH of 11.6.

Sodium carbonate is used as a flux in the metallurgical industry, as well as a softener in water purification. In addition, it can also be used as a degreaser on the surface of mechanical parts and in the production of sodium and other compounds. Anhydrous sodium carbonate is widely used as a benchmark reagent in chemical analysis in various industries. In addition, it often exists in other forms of hydrates, including the following hydrates: Na2CO3 · H2O monohydrate, Na2CO3 · 7H2O heptahydrate, and Na2CO3 · 10H2O decahydrate. Sodium carbonate decahydrate, also known as crystal alkali or washing alkali, absorbs heat when dissolved in water and is prone to weathering in the air, losing its crystalline water. Mainly used as a washing alkali, suitable for washing textiles, and as a bleaching agent for cotton and linen. In addition, sodium carbonate monohydrate is a stable sodium carbonate, also known as carbon oxygen, used as a developer component in the photography industry.
